Before the idea of StarJar ever existed, our home was overflowing with half-used sticker charts, forgotten reward systems, and endless requests from the kids: "Can I have more screen time?", "Can I get pocket money?", "Can I bake a cake?"

With three children – one with additional needs and one being assessed – life was already full. The kids wanted pocket money and responsibility, but in reality the path was bumpy. Chores didn't feel as glamorous as they imagined, and we struggled to keep track of who had done what.

We have non-negotiables like picking up toys and bringing laundry to the basket, but beyond that it often felt chaotic trying to wrangle challenging behaviours while wanting to build up the kids' self-esteem.

Why Traditional Reward Charts Didn't Work for Us

Like so many parents, we'd tried sticker charts and lists. They worked for a while; but with both of us busy, it was too easy to forget to update them or remind the kids to earn their rewards. With three children, each at different stages, the charts quickly fell apart.

It wasn't the idea that failed, it was the practicality. We needed a tool that could keep up with our family life.

"We needed something that wouldn't get forgotten under a pile of school letters or require me to remember who did what three days ago."

The Spark of StarJar

The turning point came in a moment of half-joking, half-serious inspiration. My husband and creator of StarJar, Christopher, can build anything, and one day I joked with him that he should turn the reward charts into a website/app so we could manage the goals more easily.

At first, we imagined something simple – just a points tracker to help us manage screentime (the golden reward in our household). But as we thought about it more, we realised it could be so much bigger: a way to track chores, pocket money, and goals all in one place.

I showed it to my mummy friends who couldn't believe Christopher had created the app and assured me they wanted a way to track their households too.

How Our Children Shaped the App

Our children's personalities and needs have been at the heart of StarJar from day one. For a long time, we held back on chores, thinking our eldest (who is autistic) wasn't ready. But that meant his younger siblings were also held back, and it limited all of our growth as a family.

The very clear sign came when our eldest started Year 5. He told me outright that he didn't want to be treated like a baby anymore and at school his one-to-one was making him feel he wasn't capable. It was a powerful moment that showed us he was ready for more and that we needed to trust him.

That experience was an early step that led to us trying to build more responsibility into the kids' day-to-day lives and ultimately brought us towards today and the designing of StarJar with flexibility in mind: goals that can be tailored to each child and gradually built up as they gain confidence.

🌟 Core Values of StarJar

Trust: Kids can see their progress for themselves – no more relying on busy parents to remember.

Motivation: Our children now offer to do more at home, taking pride in their work.

Flexibility: Parents can set goals that match each child's readiness, and adapt them as they grow.

Confidence: Kids see that their efforts matter, and they learn valuable skills in the process.

What StarJar Brings to Families

When our children check their dashboards, they're not just seeing stars or points – they're actively using maths to figure out how far they have to go, setting goals, and practising independence.

And for us as parents? It means fewer mental tabs open, less stress, and a system we can finally keep up with.

More than just an app, we wanted StarJar to bring these core values into family homes. The result is a tool that adapts to your family's unique needs – whether you have one child or six, whether your children are neurotypical or have additional needs.

Parenting Lessons Along the Way

Parenting has opened our eyes to how much hands-on guidance children really need. So often negative behaviour in our home has simply been the result of a misunderstanding. When we respond calmly and consistently, we see a real shift.

One of the most surprising insights has come from our eldest, who will now tell us straight out when he's "attention seeking." That honesty has been a gift, showing us how vital it is to look beyond the behaviour and see the need underneath.

"We learned the value in asking questions and really listening to what the kids answer in order to get to the root of what they need."

Parents have to grow too; as quickly as the kids develop, here we are, jogging behind, trying to keep up with what's new and motivating them. Every step along that pathway is precious until one day we can trust them to navigate for themselves.

Looking Ahead

For us, StarJar is more than a product – it's a way to share what we've learned with other families who feel stretched, overwhelmed, or just tired of abandoned sticker charts.

If we could sum it up in one sentence: StarJar is a tool that takes the stress out of parenting by bringing consistency, accountability, and a sense of achievement for kids and parents alike.

We're excited to see families using it day to day – as an effortless way to track chores, pocket money, and rewards, but also as a springboard for confidence and harmony in the home.

Or, as our kids would put it: "It's a cool way to see how much screentime I've earned – and it's like my own online savings account."

Final Word

StarJar was born from our family's chaos, challenges, and a simple wish to make life easier. If you've ever felt like reward systems just don't stick, or that keeping track of three (or more!) children's progress is impossible – you're not alone.

We built StarJar because we needed it. And now, we're sharing it with families like yours who are ready for a better way.
